I use modular router with a vacuum upgrade or the sophisticated storage with the vacuum upgrade works really well too. I found the same problem. I think what was happening was that the XP orbs were getting too big to fit in the tank. I put a second one down and it seems to be working better.
The spike method will still work, though, so if that's simpler for you, there's no reason to not do it. Sky Factory 4 also has Deep Mob Learning for getting mob drops later game, so if you need larger amounts of mob drops you can upgrade to that instead. For the actual farm just use everything from Mob Grinding Utils. Fans with upgrades for however large of a space you have and the crusher. I make a 15x15(internal) 3 high room. I make 5 mob fans from mob grinding utilities. 3 of them go in the back wall and have 2 width upgrades in them and iirc 9 distance upgrades and 1 height upgrade. This will force all the mobs to the last row.
