The old timers sorted out how long a barrel needed to be and as powder got better the barrel got shorter.Remove toothpicks and let everything come together. Put greased barrel back in the stock channel. THIS IS A MUST DO. So the barrel channel doesn't get compressed/narrowed/squished by a vise or clamps alone. You indeed have a Mowrey rifle, which were produced for a while in Olney, Texas. They are a copy of the Allen & Thurber rifles of the 1850's and 1860's, which were produced in Worcester, Massachusetts. A rather unique rifle in the era of the caplock, they used a casting to house the action, and a very large casting in the butt of the stock.To get that grey look you have two options. 1) start with the barrel back "in the white" and in about 150 to 200 years it will have that nice grey look if you occasionally oil the barrel. 2) put a single application of cold blue on it.
